Circumstance: Purple needed to validate duvet and mattress prototypes against major competitors while eliminating brand bias to understand true comfort and quality perceptions. They also needed to understand how preferences differed between singles and couples.

Methods: Over seven separate projects, we recruited and tested 496 participants to measure comfort, appearance, and quality of Purple’s prototypes against competitors, and to determine whether testing methodology (individual vs. couple testing) affected results. We designed a testing methodology that allowed us to identify how partnership dynamics affected comfort preferences. Our data identified preferred comfort levels and design features for Purple's prototype iterations.

End Result: We provided Purple with unbiased performance data showing how their duvet and mattress prototypes compared to major competitors on actual comfort and quality rather than brand perception, identifying the preferred comfort levels that would resonate with their target market for both couples and individuals. Our insights helped shape Purple's go-to-market strategy by confirming which prototype designs and functionality features would be most competitive in the premium mattress market.
